AUGUST 2018

RICH’S RITINGS

I have always loved the following story:

(Two months before my father died I shared this with the church I was serving. Little did I know how much I would need the Shepherd two months later!)

A professor of English once delivered a brilliant lecture, “The Literary Excellence of the Twenty-third Psalm,” to the Literary Society of the church where he had been brought up as a boy. The old Scots minister, who had been his pastor and teacher in his youth, was the chairman. At the close of the lecture the distinguished speaker asked the old minister to read the psalm. He did so, as he had so often done through the years, to the members of the congregation, in their sorrows and troubles. A hush followed the heartfelt recital by the white-headed old man. Then the lecturer rose and quietly said, “I may know the psalm – but he knows the Shepherd.”

How about you? Do you know the Shepherd? Or does he seem to be off on some distant hill watching his flock, or is he just a theological word heard in church? Well, the Shepherd is real and he watches over his flock and searches for all of his lost sheep (even you and me!). Remember that as you journey through this month of August, reread that famous 23rd Psalm, and like that old pastor – be sure you not only have heard about, but that you also KNOW the Shepherd.

It makes all the difference in the world.

Agape,

Rev. Rich

A NOTE OF THANKS

The blood drive held on Monday July 16 was one of our most successful.  The goal of collection was exceeded. Thank you for donating to this life-saving cause and the United Methodist Men for hosting it.

It is interesting talking to the donors after they have given blood. They have their reasons for giving. Some said that a family member always gave so they want to carry on the tradition. One lady said her blood was marked for the pediatric ward at UNC hospital, smiling then hugging her chest thinking of those babies. Some give because they believe it is the right thing to do. It’s a good feeling knowing you helped save lives.  The need is constant; contact the American Red Cross at redcrossblood.org or 800-RED CROSS.

THANK YOU FROM THE ASP TEAM

ASP 2018 Summer Youth Trips – Holland’s UMC had a team of (30) volunteers serve the week of 06/17 to 06/23 in Jonesville, VA & another team of (34) volunteers serve the week of 07/15 to 07/21 in Rutherford County, NC. The teams want to take a moment to “Thank” the HUMC community for their spiritual, physical & financial support throughout the 2017 & 2018 calendar time frame spent in preparing for, and traveling on these trips. It is a true blessing to travel beyond the walls of 9433 Ten-Ten Road to be the hands and feet of our savior to people in need of their homes to be safer and dryer. Planning for next year begins soon and look for sign-up sheets posted in the hallway in late August/early September regarding summer 2019 trips.

FOOD BANK

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina

In July, Holland’s UMC volunteers worked our regularly scheduled monthly work date at the Food Bank warehouse on Capital Boulevard. Volunteers participated in “salvage” operations of drink & food items donated by local food stores.  In total, our work helped salvage approximately 9,000 lbs. of food.

Holland’s UMC regularly scheduled monthly work dates are the 2nd Thursday of each month.  We meet at the church parking lot at 8:15 am or at the food bank warehouse, where we work from 9:00 am to noon. There is no monthly commitment, no heavy lifting, just come and work when you can. We have a lot of fun working with others as the hands and body of Christ. MISSIONARY OF THE MONTH FOR AUGUST

Claudette Mora

Serving At: United Methodist Mission

Location: HondurasLatin America and the Caribbean

Home Country: BrazilLatin America and the Caribbean

Spouse: Pablo Mora Bogado

Claudete de Mello Mora is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as mission administrator and program director of the United Methodist Mission in Honduras, based in Tegucigalpa. She was commissioned in late 2014.

The Mission in Honduras, serving a Spanish-speaking population, was begun as a Global Ministries mission initiative in 1998 and became a formal mission in 2002. It currently has 19 congregations and 53 faith communities. Many of the constituents are from the economic margins. Claudete works closely with the local groups in building program networks in education and leadership development, and in forging a national identity for the young church.

Claudete, a native of Brazil, is a member of the Evangelical Community of Paraguay in Asunción. She married her husband, the Rev. Pablo Mora, also a missionary, when he was in ministry in Brazil. Claudete holds masters degrees in school supervision and school administration from the University of Pedagogy in Campo Grande in Brazil.

She has worked as a primary school teacher in Brazil and in 1988 went to Paraguay as a missionary with her husband. Claudete worked with the young Evangelical Methodist Community for nine years, until in 1997 she joined the staff of the then new Methodist Biblical Theological Institute, a role she filled until 2013.

Born into a Christian home, Claudete says that the faith of her parents and their life testimonies instructed her in the way of Lord. She learned to use her ability and skills in the service of God and the church. When her husband left Brazil for mission service in Paraguay, the Lord used her in what she calls “an adventure in church planting.” She worked especially in child evangelization, primary education, Bible institutes, and ministries with women.

“God has been wonderful,” she says, “In giving me the opportunity to serve in another country and, principally, in the areas for which I was prepared.” She welcomes new challenges in Honduras. “Ever since my youth, I have served the Lord with full conviction that I must use all my skills and gifts for the service of the kingdom.”

Claudete and Pablo have two grown children, Thiago and Rebecca.
