RICH’S RITINGS

On October the 27th 1771 (246 years ago), Francis Asbury arrived in the Colonies when he disembarked in Philadelphia. For the next 45 years, traveling on horseback or by carriage, he would cover more than 270,000 miles sharing the Gospel of Jesus! He would preach over 16,500 sermons and ordain over 4000 Methodist preachers! (In 1784 there were only 83 Methodist preachers in early America). He preached his last sermon on Sunday, March 24th, 1816. HE HAD TO BE CARRIED INTO AND OUT OF THE CHURCH. He was so weak he could not stand, yet he preached for an hour seated at a table. Asbury died on March 31st , 1816 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. He is known as the “Father of American Methodism.”

I wonder what “Father” Asbury would think of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Pastors and laity today? I think he would be incredulous that his beloved church was losing membership. I think he would challenge the preachers to preach the Word of God and only HIS word. He would challenge us to lift up and live the Gospel everywhere we went. He would challenge the laity to know Jesus and to share him with their neighbors. I think he would wonder how many Bible studies we taught and/or attended. He would question all of us about how passionate we are about Jesus. I know he would challenge us to reach the lost and the hurting and to preach the gospel all the time – even if it required words!

The man who preached every Sunday on the trip to the New World even preached in the midst of a terrible storm during that trip. In his journal, Asbury writes of that moment,  “I fix (tied) myself to the mast and discoursed (preached) with warmth and freedom to the sailors*.”   Are there any doubts that Asbury then would also call you and I to the same passion for God’s church and the gospel of Jesus Christ that he had? So, the challenge and question for each one of us is, do you have that passion?

If you are looking for it or wanting to strengthen it, Holland's UMC is a great place to do it! Between our Sunday school classes, our children and youth activities, the Higher Ground Service, our Bible Studies and our worship services, we have no excuses but to get excited and passionate about Jesus!!! We are called to be the church and the Disciples that Asbury knew we could be. 246 years ago a single man came with a heart on fire to share Jesus. Dare we do less today? I think not!

SAMARITAN'S PANTRY

Samaritan’s Pantry is an ongoing, church-wide ministry to help those in need.  Each month, we will suggest an “item of the month” or you can bring whatever you have on hand.  The proceeds are donated to Garner Area Ministries.  The Samaritan’s Pantry is located in the hallway near the church office. Items for donation in are Peanut butter & jelly.  For more information, please contact Lavonda Bagwell at 919-772-8171.

FOOD BANK OF CENTRAL & EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA

In September Holland's UMC volunteers worked our regularly scheduled monthly work date at the Food Bank warehouse on Capital Boulevard. This month volunteers participated in “salvaging” dry goods, canned foods, water and drinks & non-food items, donated by local food stores.  In total our work helped salvage 12,600 lbs. of food or approximately 10,800 meals.

Reminder, Holland's UMC regularly scheduled monthly work dates are the 2nd Thursday of each month.  We meet at the church parking lot at 8:15 a.m. & caravan up to the food bank warehouse, where we work from 9:00 a.m. to noon. There is no monthly commitment, no heavy lifting, just come and work when you can. We have a lot of fun working with others as the hands & body of Christ. MISSIONARY OF THE MONTH

Gaston Nkulu Ntambo is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Based in Luena, Gaston serves as a pilot and mechanic with the Wings of the Morning Aviation Ministry in the North Katanga Conference.

The aviation ministry provides transportation in hard-to-reach areas of Africa, especially in emergency situations. Reflecting on his work, Gaston says, “I believe God is using me as a tool to reach out and save lives.” He recalls that he once flew unknowingly into a war zone in an attempt to save lives. “As a miracle, the highest officer in that village on that day happened to also be my uncle,” he reports. “Out of nowhere, he suddenly introduced himself to me for the first time.”

A native of Kamina, DRC, Gaston earned associate degrees in accounting and piloting from Davis College in Toledo, OH. He received a mechanic's certificate from the Michigan Institute of Aeronautics in Detroit, MI.

Prior to his commissioning as a GBGM missionary, Gaston worked six years as a Wings of the Morning pilot. He previously served as an assistant and secretary with the United Methodist Church in Lumbumbashi, DRC.

Gaston is married to Jeanne Kabove Ntambo, also a GBGM missionary. They have five children: Andy Nkulu and Lorree Nkulu, born 8/1996; Gabriel Kahenga, born 8/1998; Noah Kabove, born 6/2000; and Eileen, born 10/2003. Gaston's father is Bishop Ntambo Nkulu of the North Katanga Conference. Gaston is a member of a local United Methodist church in Luena.
