JANUARY 2018

RICH’S RITINGS

As we begin a new year, (2018 sure sounds strange doesn’t it?), I thought I would direct our thoughts toward an article that was in the “Ladies Home Journal” by one of our Presidents. It was addressing why we should attend and be involved in church:

1) We live in a churchless age when people ignore their religious needs. Such an age is on the downgrade. We must not disregard spiritual values.

2) Church attendance reminds us of our responsibility for others and a sense of our own moral strength, preventing our decay.

3) The excuse of not attending is well known: worship can be done in a forest by a stream, or in your own house; but the fact is that the average person does not concentrate only on God in such settings.

4) You may not hear a good sermon in church every week, but you will hear a sermon by a good person with a good spouse who, in a weekend series of hum-drum and important tasks makes hard lives easier.

5) You will hear beautiful words in Scripture and sing good hymns. You will also nod to good neighbors and come away feeling more charitable to the world.

6) The person who does not connect with some working active church misses many opportunities to be of help to others, and also incidentally to be of help to themselves.

These words were not written by Presidents Obama, Clinton, or either Bushes. They were written by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1917!!!! They are 100 years old this year. Yet they are as relevant and important today as they were 100 years ago – maybe even more so. Holland's is a GREAT church. It is a church where you can encounter the Lord through sermons and songs, scriptures and prayers, Bible studies and fellowship. So NO EXCUSES (see #3 above)!

If it will help you, make a New Year’s resolution to come to church faithfully. In fact, make a New Year’s resolution to bring someone as well! Happy New Year and see you in Church!

Agape,
Rev. Rich

Thank You!

Dear Church Family:

On behalf of Debbie and myself, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for the multitude of Christmas cards and  wonderful “glad you are here” messages.  We also want to thank you for  all the gifts from sweets, (even  candy “coal” in my stocking!), to books bowls etc.  We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love. Thank you for making our first Christmas at Holland’s so very, very special!

Agape,

Rev. Rich & Debbie

Family Promise of Wake County

Holland's will be hosting Family Promise of Wake County the week of January 28 through February 4. We will need volunteers to help with cooking/serving meals, drivers for the van, and overnight hosts. The sign-up poster for volunteers will be in the narthex soon.  Please be thinking about how you can help serve for this wonderful mission.  If you need more information, or would like to sign up ahead of time, please contact Joey Neal at 919-480-3908 or This email address is being protected from spambots. ASP

The ASP 2018 Summer Youth Team would like to take a moment to say a blessed “Thank You” to the church for the support in our fundraising efforts for our upcoming June & July 2018 summer trips. The Auction Fund Raiser on Saturday December 2, 2017 helped raise $10,700 in our efforts to achieve our annual goal. In addition, the team “thanks” the following for making this event such a huge success:

  • Laura Hoffman & the ASP Fundraising Committee for coordinating this event.
  • Jeff & Donna Hayes for their efforts in planning and preparing the meal.
  • Al & Ronnie Burnette and Steve Middleton, our auctioneers.
  • Higher Ground for providing musical accompaniment.
  • All the parents & youth who planned, served, cooked and cleaned.

If you missed the auction, as we proceed in 2018, be on the lookout for winter and spring events for other opportunities so you can help support our teams both spiritually & financially. Upcoming events will be announced in Sunday Bulletins.

FOOD BANK

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina – In 2018, Holland’s UMC volunteers will continue to work our regularly scheduled monthly work date (2nd Thursday of each month) at the Food Bank warehouse on Capital Blvd. We meet at the Food Bank or the church parking lot at 8:15 am and caravan up to the food bank warehouse, where we work from 9:00 a.m. to noon. There is no monthly commitment, no heavy lifting, just come and work when you can. We have a lot of fun working with others as the hands and body of Christ.
