In 1963 a singing group known as “The Four Seasons” released a mega hit entitled, “Walk Like a Man.” In 1986 an all-female band called the “Bangles” released a mega hit entitled, “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Today this “seasoned pastor” wants to release a mega phrase to “walk like a Christian.”
What does it mean to walk like a Christian? It means we walk in faith. It means we walk in love. It means we walk in strength in a crazy world. It means we walk in peace through the valley of the shadow of death, because we know who our Shepherd is and what awaits at the end of the valley. It means we walk through life and its uncertainties with a light that shines in the darkness and we remember that the darkness has not overcome it. It means we walk through times and situations we do not understand with a trust and a hope in what the Bible says and who we know Jesus is.
The apostle Paul reminds us in II Corinthians 5:7 that “we walk by faith, not by sight.” That is who we are. We are people of faith, followers of the Lamb, soldiers of Christ - we are disciples. And that means when the storms of society rant and rage, we stand firm. We stand on the Word of God. We claim His promises; we remember His track record.
This is not an easy time to be a Christian. Our brothers and sisters of the faith, across the world, have seen a lot harder times than we have. In fact, we are just getting accustomed to not being smiled upon as Christians. Jesus, of course, tried to warn us it would not be easy, but it would be special and the rewards would be “out of this world!” We Christians in America have gotten soft. But the time has now come for the church to put back on the armor of God (see Ephesians 6:10-18) to walk in faith, and most of all for every one of us “to walk like a Christian.” Amen & Amen.
